A Rare Kawai Piano Targeted by Thieves

Barcelona’s Mossos d'Esquadra have successfully recovered several stolen parts of an exceptionally rare Kawai piano valued at one million euros. The instrument is one of only five replicas in existence worldwide. The stolen components—three glass legs, a lyre, and a piano bench—were found in good condition and are estimated to be worth 50,000 euros collectively.

The Bold Heist and the Key Clue

The theft occurred on February 9, when two men, aged 22 and 24, allegedly broke into a transport truck from Valencia carrying the precious instrument. The criminals seized several packages containing the distinctive piano parts before disappearing without a trace.

However, their luck ran out when police investigators noticed a suspicious vehicle on February 13. A seemingly insignificant scratch on the left side of the car became the key clue that led officers from the Sants-Montjuïc police station to the suspects. This discovery ultimately enabled them to track down the stolen items and apprehend the culprits.

Following their arrest, the two suspects voluntarily led authorities to a parking lot near Barcelona’s Zona Franca, where the stolen piano components had been hidden. Fortunately, the items were undamaged and were immediately returned to their rightful owner.

The two men were detained for questioning but were later released pending further legal proceedings. They are now required to appear before a judge as the investigation continues.

A Cautionary Tale for the Art World

This case highlights the high value and vulnerability of rare musical instruments, which are often targeted by thieves due to their uniqueness and resale potential. The successful recovery of these piano components is a testament to the sharp investigative skills of Barcelona’s police, proving that sometimes, even the smallest detail—like a scratch—can crack a major case.
